Seamus MacBride President of BWTUC said,
"This is most welcome news for the residents of the Alton Estate in Roehampton. Securing such a huge vote in support of the council's ambitious plan for the estate is a major achievement for the Labour administration in Wandsworth Council and for Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for Housing, in particular.
It relegates to history the plans of the previous Tory administration which involved the demolition of 300 homes on the estate.
Nearly a decade ago, the residents of these homes, facing being thrown out to make way for a development designed to make money for property developers, turned to BWTUC for support.
We didn't let them down. We salute their determination to fight for a plan that would enjoy the support of the residents.
We will now turn to the next stage of this much needed investment getting under way in Roehampton. It will be a huge construction project requiring a lot of highly skilled workers to realise this ambitious plan. We will keep in close touch with residents, Wandsworth Council and our affiliated unions on this.
BWTUC and its affiliated unions will be supporting this Labour administration and Aydin Dikerdem to secure their re-election in May 2026 to ensure that the plan for the Alton Estate is implemented in full.
Last week's monthly meeting of BWTUC was unanimous on this."
